In the prewar years, religious controversies raged around the various forms of "modernism," which had been denounced in Pope Pius IX's "Syllabus of Errors" of 1864, accompanied by a whole list of other secularizing "-isms." One side provides facts about and explanations of the architecture; the other provides facts and a few descriptions concerning the landscaping and more extensive images and descriptions of the "Central Garden." Both are centred upon absence, loss, and the ineffable pastness of the past as such, and both rely on a certain level of interactiveness between art and beholder to enact their commemorative function.
